License to Thrive: A VOKSEE and YWcA Partnership

Our latest collaboration with the YWCA, this time highlighting a program they created to help Afghan refugees get their driver’s licenses, is yet another partnership with their team that leaves us inspired and motivated to be better citizens and community members.

The production team was entirely local to Tulsa, with Brea Mullen as cinematographer, Marshall Baker as camera operator and editor and VOKSEE’s Rebecca Parks Fernandez as producer and director. Jiah Dzentu was the production assistant.

When we weren’t on the road or filming in their homes, we used the Mansion at Woodward Park to conduct our interviews with the Afghans who had re-settled in Tulsa.

In 2021, more than 850 Afghans fleeing the Taliban were welcomed by the City of Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Seeing a pervasive need, YWCA Tulsa partnered with the City to offer driving classes for women.

"License to Thrive" is the short film capturing the transformative journey of Afghan women participating in a driving program initiated and backed by YWCA Tulsa and the City of Tulsa. Through compelling storytelling, the film delves into the lives of these courageous women as they navigate the challenges and triumphs of obtaining their driver's licenses, symbolizing newfound independence and empowerment.

This initiative holds immense significance for the burgeoning Afghan community in Tulsa, offering vital support and opportunities for women to break barriers and thrive.

Your contribution can make a profound difference, enabling more women to access this life-changing program and embark on their own paths to independence.
